Happy International Left Handers Day!

Today we celebrate International Left Handers Day!!

It is a day to celebrate our left handed brothers and sisters and rejoice in everything that can be done with the left hand!!
I am a left hander and have had this condition for all of my life. I have known no different and have danced all my life with two left feet. I take pleasure in confusing people by offering my left hand to shake. I can be easily identified as I wear smudged pen all over my hand like a tattoo.
I might seem like a positive left hander, but I have also suffered with this condition. In my time, I faced many right handed obstacles. The can-opener, the desk mounted pencil sharpener, the scissors, the computer mouse, the spiral bound notepad and of course the lecture chairs that have a right handed desk.
At times I have been thrown into spirals of despair, and have struggled to continue in this right handed world. I take great comfort there is a dedicated day that recognises the lefties like me.

Left Handed Facts*

  • Between 10-12% of people on earth are “lefties.” Women are more likely to be right-handed than men by about 4 percentage points.
  • The left side, which is historically seen as weaker and “bad,” is also traditionally considered to be the female side. However, current scientific data suggests that men are more likely to be left-handed than women.
  • Left-handedness runs in families. Lefties in the British royal family include the Queen Mother, Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Charles, and Prince William.
  •  Ultrasounds show that in the womb, 90% of babies appear to favor the right thumb, which corresponds to population breakdowns of right-handers and left-handers.
When placed on their tummies, right-handed babies tend to turn their heads to the right. Left-handed babies usually turn their heads to the left or they don’t show any preference.
  •  The word left in English comes from the Anglo-Saxon word lyft, which means weak or broken.
  • Mothers who are over 40 at the time of a child’s birth are 128% more likely to have a left-handed baby than a woman in her 20s.
